Kayaking on a river system
One of my favorite things to do when the weather gets nice is go kayaking on the Illinois River. A nice calm or semi choppy day out on the water seems to let all of life's worries just float away. The serenity and peace that comes from being in the middle of a large river system is a blessing to one's soul.

I usually take a few fishing rods with me on my adventures, casting and finding new locations that hold fish. Sometimes though I love to just float, take pictures, and enjoy the solitude of being on the water. I recommend a few kayak trips to any one who loves nature. I want to offer some tips that may be of use on your kayak adventures.
10 tips for beginners or experienced kayakers:
Always have safety in mind, large river systems can have varying degrees of current and it is important to plan your trip from start to finish.
Ensure you pack the right amount of gear and safety equipment to get you through your trip and extras in case of an emergency.
First aid kits should be kept on board along with extra clothing in dry bags. You want to be prepared in an emergency situation. Help may not be quick to respond if you are stuck in the middle of a river.
If you have never kayaked on a river I would suggest going with someone who regularly kayaks these bodies of water before venturing out on your own.
If your river is narrow and has a lot of current, go out in groups staging pickup vehicles downstream from your put in point. Paddling into the current can be exhausting and unfeasible in some river systems.
Avoid extremely windy rivers that do not provide a wind break. Kayaks do not sit high above the water and can take on water quickly. Especially sit in kayaks.
Always have a way to communicate and let someone know your plans before heading out on a river alone.
Do not go beyond your comfort zone without proper protections in place, friend on call, or a back up plan in case things go wrong.
It does not hurt to carry light camping gear in case you need to hit an island due to a storm or emergency.
Remember, rivers are beautiful places to spend time, but dangers can arise swiftly and without notice. Have fun, most of all be safe!
Rivers are fabulous places to kayak, immerse yourself in nature and see some extraordinary views. They can also be dangerous and quite destructive. I regularly take precautions before going out kayaking on river systems and you should too. It is an unforgettable experience kayaking river systems and I hope you safely get out and experience it yourself.
